What is TR-069?
TR-069 is the Broadband Forum specification defining the CPE WAN Management Protocol: the way an Auto Configuration Server communicates with customer premises equipment such as routers, ONTs and gateways over the operator's own network.
How does TR-069 work?
The device initiates. It opens an HTTP session to the ACS and sends an Inform message carrying an event code, its serial number and current parameter values. The ACS responds with a queue of remote procedure calls — GetParameterValues, SetParameterValues, Download, Reboot, FactoryReset — and the session closes. Sessions are triggered periodically, on boot, on value change, or on demand through a connection request.
Why does an ISP need TR-069?
Without it, every configuration change is a truck roll or a call-centre script read aloud to a subscriber. With it, a firmware campaign across two million homes becomes a scheduled job with criteria, progress reporting and rollback.
