What is a TR-069 ACS, and what does it actually do?

A TR-069 Auto Configuration Server is the management plane for broadband CPE. It provisions, configures, monitors, diagnoses and upgrades routers and ONTs remotely, over the operator's own network.

An Auto Configuration Server (ACS) is the server side of the Broadband Forum's TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol. Every compliant router, ONT or mesh node opens a session to the ACS, presents its data model, and accepts instructions.

How a TR-069 session works

The CPE initiates. It sends an Inform message carrying an event code, its serial number and current parameter values. The ACS answers with a queue of remote procedure calls, then closes the session.

Why operators need one

Without an ACS, every configuration change is a truck roll or a call-centre script. With one, a firmware campaign across two million homes is a scheduled job with rollback.
